5 Things You Must Check Out at Mai Khao Beach
Looking for the quiet and peaceful getaway of your dreams? Mai Khao Beach in Phuket is the place to be. This stretch of beach is on the northern end of Phuket island, right next to the airport. The beach is on the west coast of the island, so you will get to experience a beautiful sunset in the evenings. Mai Khao Beach has always been a popular destination for tourism, but the area is not densely populated or overcrowded like some other parts of Phuket. There is a lot do in Mai Khao Beach that ranges from the regular recreation and relaxation to some more active and engaging activities. Above everything, the appreciation for nature in its many forms is a common theme in Mai Khao that isn’t always apparent in Phuket and Thailand. Here are some things that you can look forward to in Mai Khao Beach.
Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation
One of the most important and consistent conservation activities that takes place on Mai Khao Beach is the preservation of marine turtle nesting sites. Mai Khao is one of the last few beaches in Phuket that still hosts nesting turtles. In fact, the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation is working hard to make this beach the safe haven for marine turtles to nest. The eggs are rescued from surrounding beaches where their safety cannot be guaranteed by the foundation. These eggs are then handed over to the Phuket Marine Biological Centre (PMBC) or the Royal Thai Navy for safe rehoming. One of the most important features of the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation is how they educate the general public about sea turtles. You can look for their public events on their social media channels or go visit them to see how they are managing the marine turtles.
International Wake Park
Experience extreme water sports in a whole new way at the International Wake Park. Wakeboarding has been a niche sport from the very beginning, but the International Wake Park might be the right place to learning a thing or two about wakeboarding. With cables, obstacles and expert guidance, this wakepark is made for the pros but still retains plenty of opportunities for budding wakeboarders to explore. The cable system takes riders through the course of obstacles and there is plenty of supervision and equipment for rent. IWP also has a flow ride surf simulator, a system that creates manageable waves to practice surfing on. This simulator is a great place to spend the afternoon blissfully surfing and enjoying the outdoors.
Watch the Planes Take Off and Land
Since Mai Khao Beach is right next to Phuket international airport, the planes tend to come in extremely low just above the beach. It might be one of the few places where you can see a large jumbo jet landing up close. Setting up on the southern end of the beach just outside the airport is one of the best places to go plane spotting as they fly in directly overhead. Use this opportunity to get a unique photograph with the airplane as the backdrop.
Soi Dog Foundation
Starting out as an initiative to sterilize and neuter the out of control stray dog population in Phuket, Soi Dog Foundation has grown into a leading organization for the ethical treatment of animals in Thailand. The Soi Dog foundation office at Phuket was the starting point for these activities and it is now one of the biggest animal shelters on the island. Dog lovers can volunteer at the shelter for a short duration or sponsor a dog’s care at the shelter. This is a great way to contribute to a good cause as Soi Dog has made a definite and appreciable difference to the stray dog population of Phuket and other parts of Thailand.
Splash Jungle Water Park
For a fun day out with a family, Splash Jungle Water Park is an excellent destination. The waterpark is open from 10 am to 5:45 pm and it can definitely take up your whole day with water slides, wave pools and family slides to keep you busy. You can also tuck into some food at three restaurants and even get a drink while staying in the water at the Splash Bar.
